Lijiang Ancient Town, also known as "Dayan Ancient Town", stands at an altitude of 2,400 meters. It serves as the central city of Lijiang Naxi Autonomous County. As one of China's famous historical and cultural cities, it is also a World Cultural Heritage site. Located in Lijiang City, southwest China's Yunnan Province, it is situated in the middle of the Lijiang Basin, at the foot of Jade Dragon Snow Mountain, with Xiangshan Mountain and Jinhong Mountain to its north and Lion Mountain to its west. Along with Langzhong in Sichuan, Pingyao in Shanxi, and Shexian in Anhui—all of which are also among the second batch of China's national historical and cultural cities—Lijiang Ancient Town is acclaimed as one of the "four best-preserved ancient cities." It was one of the second batch of cities approved as China's famous historical and cultural cities and is one of only two ancient county towns in China (the other being Pingyao Ancient Town in Shanxi) that have successfully applied for World Cultural Heritage status as a whole ancient town.
