繁体字，是指中国历史上最近的一次（即1956年）汉字简化后被简体字所代替的原来笔画较多的汉字。繁体字与中华五千年的文明史紧紧地联系在一起，密不可分。这种联系使繁体字在很大程度上成了中华古代文明的代名词，象征着灿烂的中华文化。目前，繁体字主要通行于台湾、香港、澳门与海外华人聚居区，使用人数超过三千多万。另外，一些繁体字还在日本和韩国使用。
