bark up the wrong tree 源于美国西部拓荒时期,拓荒者训练狗将猎物叼回来,动物为了逃命往往会爬到树上去。狗有时会一时糊涂,没看清楚猎物上了哪颗树,对着一棵没有动物的树乱叫。这个俚语比喻:“错怪某人,攻击错了目标”。因此,当美国人说"You're barking up the wrong tree!"时,他/她要表达的意思就是:"You are accusing me wrongly!"、"You are waking up the wrong passenger!"。
